📝The Panther Project Blueprint🐾

Welcome back, Panther families! As we dive into the new school year, your student will face bigger, more complex assignments. To help them master the executive functioning skill of planning, we’re kicking off the year by creating a map for success with The Panther Project Blueprint. This simple ritual teaches them to  break down any big task into achievable first steps.
How to Build Your Project Blueprint
Find 15 minutes to sit down with your child and choose one complex, multi-step task—from a family project to cleaning a messy closet—and map it out together:
  1. The Final Destination (The Roar): Clearly define the end goal. What does done look like? (e.g., “The  chicken coop is ready for chickens." or "My entire room is clean.")
  2. Identify the Steps (The Pounces): Help your child brainstorm all the steps needed. Write them down  in a list.
  • Example for the chicken coop: "Start by discussing their ideas and the needs of the chickens, then move to location, design, and essential features like nesting boxes and perches"
  • Example for the room: "Clear the floor, put clothes away, organize the desk, dust everything, vacuum."
  1. The Very First Pounce (The Start): Ask, "What is the single, easiest step you can do in the next 15 minutes?" Focusing on the first step—the Pounce—makes the whole project less overwhelming. Once that step is done, the momentum starts!
The Benefit: A Clear Path to Success
This activity teaches your child to see the path, not just the mountain. By helping them plan and break down tasks, you are giving them the Responsibility to own the process and the Readiness to handle any challenge the school year throws their way!
New Panther Families: Your Foundational Focus
If this is your first year with us, we recommend starting with The Panther High-Low Huddle (sharing one "High"—best thing—and one "Low"—most challenging thing—at dinner). This simple daily connection ritual is the foundation of strong home-school communication!
This simple ritual ensures you and your child connect every day, sharing both the triumphs and the challenges of being back in the classroom.
How to Hold Your High-Low Huddle
Find a consistent time each evening—like during dinner, while preparing dinner, or right before bedtime—and ask every member of the family to share two things:
  1. The Panther High: The best thing that happened to you today. This could be a compliment from a teacher, a fun memory with a friend, mastering a tough math problem, or an exciting moment at recess.
  2. The Panther Low: The most challenging or difficult thing that happened to you today. This is the opportunity to share a stressful moment, a disappointment, or a task that felt overwhelming.
The Power of the Huddle
This activity does two critical things:
  • It Builds Trust: By sharing a "low," your child learns that it's okay to talk about difficulties, and that your family is a safe place to process challenging emotions.
  • It Sharpens Focus: It forces students (and adults!) to pause and reflect on the day, moving past general statements like "It was fine" to focus on specific, meaningful moments of growth and challenge.
By making the High-Low Huddle a daily habit, you reinforce the message that as a Panther Family, we celebrate success together, and we face challenges together!

Important Information

OHI Student Picture Day is September 17th. All students will be photographed by O'Connor Photography Studio for their student ID card and school record. Picture retakes will be on October 29th.
If you would like to order picture packets you may do so online at this LINK or by visiting the O’Connor website at: www.oconnorphotographystudio.com. If you have any questions or need assistance please email customer service at customerservice@oconnorphotographystudio.com or give the studio a call at 1-800-993-4929. If you require a paper order form, please contact the OHI front desk staff.
Student ID cards will be distributed the day after pictures in homerooms. Please note that the back of your  student’s ID card will contain OHI contact information, student help lines and, by state law, the Suicide & Crisis Hotline phone number (RCW 28A.210.400). These are fantastic resources, and we are glad we can    provide another place to promote awareness, as it is National Suicide Prevention month.
At this age and development level, we want to place as much context and support around this topic as possible, so we have included some articles that provide information and suggestions for parents to talk with their children/teens around the topic. Also, OHI counselors will be going into classrooms to provide smaller group instruction on Mental Health Hygiene for 5th graders and Suicide Prevention for 6th graders starting in late October.
Please reach out to your child's counselor below if you have questions or would like more information.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNSELORS

WELCOME BACK!

The Oak Harbor Intermediate School counseling team can’t wait to meet you and your students!
During the first weeks of school, the counseling team will be going around and introducing ourselves to each of the classes. We’ll be sharing how students can access us and what types of things we do to support students. Students will take a few quick surveys to help us better understand what they need this year as  well as give students an initial opportunity to schedule an appointment with us.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have! We work with students based on their last name.
