March: Learning from the Lunge 🐾

In February, our families focused on giving back with the "Panther Service Spotlight," strengthening our community's heart.
As we move into March and the core of the school year, let's focus on resilience and the growth mindset. Learning is rarely easy; it involves effort, challenges, and, yes, mistakes. This month, we challenge your family to adopt the Learning from the Lunge strategy. This helps children see errors as information—not failure—that guides their next powerful move!

How to Practice the Lunge Strategy
The goal is to change how your family talks about errors, creating a safe space for productive risk-taking and learning.

  1. Change the Language (The "Roar"): When your child makes a mistake on homework, a chore, or a game, replace discouraged words with a positive, growth-focused question. Use the Panther themes:
  • Instead of: "Why did you get that wrong?"
  • Try: "That's just the Panther testing the strength of the branch! What did you learn from that mistake that will make the next attempt stronger?"
  • Instead of: "You need to fix this."
  • Try: "Great effort on that pounce! What is the next step you can try to improve your landing?"
  1. Share a "Magnificent Mistake" (The "Lunge"): Have a family conversation where adults go first and share a mistake from their day or week. Talk about something you tried, didn't quite get right, and what you learned as a result. This shows your child that even adults are always learning.
  2. Post the Mantra: Write this phrase down and post it somewhere visible: "Mistakes are proof you are trying. They are the starting line for learning, not the finish line!"
The Benefit: Building Panther Courage
Teaching your child to see errors as information rather than defeat builds their resilience and confidence. It gives them the Panther Courage to take on tough challenges, knowing that effort and learning from every "lunge" are what truly lead to long-term success.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR NURSES

March is National Nutrition Month

Supporting Healthy Habits for Strong, Ready-to-Learn Students

Good nutrition plays an important role in student health, focus, and academic success. March is a great time for families to review healthy routines and make small changes that support energy, growth and overall well-being.

Build a Balanced Plate

Use the MyPlate model as a simple guide when preparing meals:
  • Fill half the plate with fruits and vegetables.
  • Include whole grains whenever possible.
  • Add lean protein such as chicken, beans, eggs, or fish.
  • Serve low-fat dairy or a fortified alternative.

Start the Day with Breakfast

Students who eat breakfast tend to have better concentration and more consistent energy throughout the day. Below are some great suggestions to start the day.
  • Yogurt with fruit and granola
  • Whole grain toast with peanut butter
  • Eggs with fruit
  • Smoothies with fruit and spinach.

Healthy Snacks and Hydration

  • Choose snacks that include protein and fiber (fruit with nut butter, cheese and crackers, vegetables and hummus).
  • Encourage students to bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Limit sugary drinks and choose water whenever possible.

Healthy Habits at Home

  • Involve children in meal planning and preparation.
  • Try one new fruit or vegetable this month.
  • Set one small nutrition goal as a family.

Counselor's Corner

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNSELORS

March 2025

The Character Strong trait for the month of March is: Cooperation!

One way to think about cooperation is “working together to reach shared goals.” Cooperation is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.

  • Character Strong Newsletter

5th Graders will be working on leadership skills.  Leadership skills include how we can positively influence others through what we say and do as well as what it looks like to be a helpful member of the classroom and community.

6th Graders will be working on what it means to be a good friend, including skills to become a better friend and strategies for resolving conflicts with peers.

National Careers Week and College Go Get it Week!

National Careers Week is March 2-7, so it is also Career and College Go Get it Week at OHI! The purpose of this week is to encourage students to start thinking about college and careers and begin to see themselves in their futures. Each day will have a career or college dress up theme, as well as a fun fact. On Thursday, students will have a chance to do a career survey on O*Net to help them start thinking about occupations that they may enjoy. This would be a great time to start talking with your kids about life after high school!

Our district’s goal is to have more than 80% of students missing no more than two days per month!

Currently, 79% of students are meeting this goal, every day matters! Help us to meet our goal!
